History of Indonesia Robusta Green Coffee Beans

The first Arabica coffee seedling came to Indonesia in 1696, brought by a Dutch colonialist. However, the thriving production of Arabica coffee in Indonesia stopped after the coffee plants suffered from the coffee rust disease. This was the starting point of the history of Indonesian Robusta coffee.

Robusta coffee was introduced in 1900 under the Dutch administration as a substitute. Due to Robusta’s high resistance to coffee rust disease, most coffee plantations in Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi shifted their focus to cultivating Robusta coffee. 

Today, approximately 80% of coffee production in Indonesia consists of a variety of Indonesia Robusta coffee beans. According to the Indonesian Grading and Classification of Green Coffee, six grades of Indonesian Robusta coffee are based on the value of the total defects. Grade six is the lowest, with 151 to 225 defects, while grade one has a maximum of 11.

Growing Robusta Coffee in Indonesia

Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, and Flores are the central regions for cultivating Robusta coffee. Robusta coffee grows in the lowlands of Indonesia with altitudes of 400 to 900 meters above sea level. The optimal temperature for cultivating these coffee plants is around 24 to 30 degrees Celsius, with precipitation of 2,000 to 3,000 millimeters per year. 

The most popular Indonesia Robusta coffee beans come from Lampung, Bengkulu, Temanggung, Dampit, Flores, Pupuan, and Toraja. Most Robusta coffees in Indonesia have a full body with low acidity. The signature flavors are dark chocolate, caramel, and spices.
